Malpe: As part of the Malpe–Adi Udupi National Highway widening project, the bus shelter near the old post office on Malpe Main Road has been dismantled. Along with the shelter, the trees that once provided shade have also been cut down, forcing commuters to wait under the scorching sun.
This bus stop on the busy Malpe Main Road serves hundreds of daily commuters, including schoolchildren and residents traveling to Udupi and other destinations. With no shelter now available, people are left standing in the open from morning till evening. Many have resorted to seeking shade under nearby flex banners and hoardings.
Ganeshotsava Committee Voices Displeasure
Two years ago, the Malpe Public Ganeshotsava Committee, with the support of local residents, constructed the now-demolished shelter at a cost of ₹2.5 lakh as part of its golden jubilee celebrations. The committee stated that authorities had promised to build a new bus shelter soon after removing the old one. However, even after two months, neither has roadwork begun nor has a new shelter been erected.
Afternoon Heat Takes a Toll
“Without a shelter, standing here is nearly impossible—especially during midday when the sun is unbearable,” said Rupesh Kotian, President of the Malpe Public Ganeshotsava Committee. He added that several residents have approached them expressing their difficulties and disappointment.
Local residents are now urging authorities to take swift action to construct a new bus shelter and resume roadwork, ensuring commuter convenience and safety.
