'No US-Russia deal without Ukraine': Top EU diplomat ahead of Trump-Putin meet; emergency talks soon

European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on Sunday asserted that any agreement between the United States and Russia to end the war in Ukraine must include both Kyiv and the EU, calling it a matter of Europe’s collective security, reported news agency AFP.

Her remarks come ahead of a planned meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump in Alaska on Friday, aimed at exploring a resolution to the ongoing three-year conflict.

“President Trump is right that Russia has to end its war against Ukraine. The US has the power to force Russia to negotiate seriously. Any deal between the US and Russia must have Ukraine and the EU included, for it is a matter of Ukraine's and the whole of Europe's security,” Kallas said in a statement on Sunday, as quoted by the agency.

She added that she would convene an extraordinary meeting of EU foreign ministers on Monday, to be held online, to discuss the bloc’s next steps.

“I will convene an extraordinary meeting of the EU foreign ministers on Monday to discuss our next steps,” she said.

Stressing the EU’s firm stance on Ukraine’s territorial integrity, Kallas said, “As we work towards a sustainable and just peace, international law is clear: All temporarily occupied territories belong to Ukraine.”

She also warned that any potential deal “must not provide a springboard for further Russian aggression against Ukraine, the transatlantic alliance and Europe.”
