At least 11 people were stabbed at a Walmart in northern Michigan's Traverse City on Saturday (local time), prompting a large-scale emergency response and an ongoing investigation by local authorities. A suspect has been taken into custody, according to state police.
Michigan state police confirmed the stabbing spree occurred at the Walmart store but said details were still emerging. "The suspect is in custody, details are limited at this time," the Michigan State Police's Sixth District said in a post on X.
Cops have asked people to avoid the area while the investigation is ongoing. Munson Medical Centre in Traverse City is currently treating all 11 victims, The New York Times reports, citing Megan Brown, Chief Communications Officer for Munson Healthcare . Brown noted that the hospital was still evaluating the extent of their injuries but did not provide specific details.
Munson Healthcare also said it was treating 11 individuals injured in the incident. The hospital pledged to share more information "as appropriate."
As of late Saturday, the condition of the victims had not been released.
Walmart spokesperson Joe Pennington said the company is cooperating fully with law enforcement. "We are working with police and defer questions to them right now," Pennington said in an email.
