NEW DELHI: External affairs minister Jaishankar said on Saturday that India and Pakistan had reached an understanding to stop "firing and military action." He further reiterated New Delhi's "uncompromising stance" against terrorism in all its forms.
"India and Pakistan have today worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action. India has consistently maintained a firm and uncompromising stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. It will continue to do so," Jaishankar said in post on X.
According to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Pakistan’s DGMO initiated the call at 15:35 IST, during which both sides agreed to halt all military activity from 17:00 IST. Misri added that instructions had been issued on both sides to enforce the agreement, and further talks were scheduled for 12 May at noon.
"Pakistan's DGMO called Indian DGMO at 15:35 hours earlier this afternoon. It was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land, in the air & sea with effect from 1700 hours IST. Instructions have been given on both sides to give effect to this understanding. They will talk again on the 12th of May at 1200 hours," Misri said.
US President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to announce that the ceasefire was a result of talks mediated by Washington. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he and Vice President JD Vance had held discussions with top Indian and Pakistani leaders, including Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif, over the past 48 hours.
"Vance and I have engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik," Rubio wrote on X.
The ceasefire comes after heightened tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad following the Pahalgam terror attack which claimed the lives of 26 terrorists. On May 7, India had launched 'Operation Sindoor' targeting terrorist infrastructure across Pakistan.
