NEW DELHI: Chief of defence staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan on Tuesday threw light upon the changing notion of measuring victory in the war, saying in modern warfare , victory is often measured by speed and tempo of the operation.
"Domination through brute force is the old norm, domination through impact and effect is a new norm," CDS said while speaking during Annual Trident Lecture Series (ATLS) at the Manekshaw Centre in Delhi.
Speaking in the context of Operation Sindoor , the CDS said, "If you look at how did we measure victory (in the) past when you talk about domination victory, we naturally associated victory with either capture of territory, number of people or equipment you killed or number of PWs you captured, loss of equipment, economic destruction, etc. Now juxtapose this with the metrics of victory which we defined for ourselves as far as Operation Sindoor is concerned."
CDS Chauhan further said, "So in today's warfare, it was something to do with speed and tempo of operations. No territory, no people. Very precision strikes . The impact was important. You could hit very, very deep inside with precision. It created a huge impact psychologically, display of sophistication and superiority. This is the matrix of victory today, it has nothing to do with territory."
India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 and decimated multiple terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir (PoK).
Pakistan also launched offensives against India, and all subsequent counter-offensives by India were also carried out under Operation Sindoor.
The military conflict halted on the evening of May 10.
