Bareilly encounter: Wanted dacoit 'Shaitaan' shot dead by UP police; accomplice escapes

NEW DELHI: A wanted dacoit, Iftekhar, also known as Soldier or Shaitaan, carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh, was killed in an encounter in UP's Bareilly with the Special Operations Group (SOG) and local police teams on Nainital Road on Thursday.

SSP Anurag Arya said, "In 2024, a robbery occurred where a reward of one lakh rupees was announced for the capture of a wanted criminal named Iftekhar, also known as Soldier or Shaitaan."

He added, "Our teams received information, and today police and SOG teams chased him near Bilwa Bridge on Nainital Road. He repeatedly fired at the police. After warnings, police fired in self-defense, injuring him. He was taken for medical treatment and referred to the district hospital. He was declared dead there..."



Arya said one of Iftekhar’s accomplices fled the scene. "From the spot, 1 motorcycle without number plate, 1 pistol, 2 magazines and some cash were recovered from him. Upon inquiry about him, it was found that a total of 19 cases are registered in 7 districts."



The SSP added, "He has previously been a criminal with 50 thousand reward and has been absconding from police custody for 8 years. 4 cases of murder and dacoity are registered against him. He had also gone to jail in 2006 for murder and dacoity of a priest under the police station. His entire gang was with him. We are still gathering more information about him. During the encounter, 1 police constable was also injured who has been sent for treatment, he has been shot in the arm."
