TV fanatics believe they have come across the worst sitcom character of all time. Frequent comedy viewers have taken to the r/BritishTV Reddit page and shared their thoughts on who could be the worst characters of all time. Comedy fans were spoilt for choice when it came to listing the very worst on-screen appearances, and believe they have found one character who trumps all when it comes to repugnant one-off performances.
Classic TV programmes like The Office, Him & Her, and The Inbetweeners were mentioned by members of the public, though those choices did not beat out the most upvoted comment. A user posted to the subreddit: "Who is the most unlikeable character ever in a sitcom?
"My pick is Mr Greencock the piano tuner. A nasty horrible hate filled man with a giant chip on his shoulder. Can anyone beat him?" Though the Friday Night Dinner character did receive some nods from TV viewers as an unlikeable character, others have beat him.
One fan suggested The Office character Chris Finch is up there with the most detestable on-screen talents. One user wrote: "I think the pub quiz scenes with him is close to the angriest, and most seething with hatred, I've ever been for a character - fictional or real."
Another agreed, adding: "It's brilliantly written. It's a personality type almost everyone has come across but perfectly tuned to its most extreme without flipping into being unbelievable."
Other suggestions included Jay's father from The Inbetweeners, Laura on Him & Her, as well as Alan Partridge.
The veteran character has been portrayed by Steve Coogan for decades, and was dubbed one of the must unlikeable comedy characters of all.
One user wrote: "Watching Partridge is like watching a monstrous middle England bore tear his way through any and every social situation."
Another fan added: "I listened to his 'autobiography' (I, Partridge - We Need to Talk About Alan) in the car for a while and it's incredibly funny, but when you're in his company for so long you really do realise what a very damaged man he is."
Though Partridge may be an intentionally unlikeable (and hilarious) character, it was Peep Show which holds the most unlikeable character of all. Reddit users came together and gave Saz from Peep Show the honour of "most unlikeable character".
A user wrote: "She does stand out even in a sitcom where every character is at least a bit of a d**k." What is even more impressive is Saz appears for just one episode of the show, featuring in Season 5, Episode 3, 'Jeremy's Broke'.
