With the summer holidays in full swing, travel to popular destinations can come at a big cost, especially for those heading abroad with children. But there are still some spots in Europe where Brits can travel without breaking the bank. One of them is Faro.
The beautiful seaside city sits on Portugal's southern coast and is a favourite among UK holidaymakers. At the time of writing, flights from London Stansted with Ryanair can be found for as little as £22 in the second half of August, with several other fares available for under £25.
Faro is often seen as the gateway to the Algarve, but it's a destination in its own right.
The city has plenty of historic charm, natural beauty and warm weather, with average August temperatures around 29C.
The Old Town is one of the highlights thanks to its whitewashed buildings, narrow cobbled streets and pretty squares.
At its centre is Faro Cathedral, where visitors can climb the tower for stunning views.
A short walk away is the Chapel of Bones, decorated with the remains of over 1,000 monks. It's an eerie spot but definitely worth visiting, according to those who were brave enough to see it for themselves.
Faro also borders the Ria Formosa Natural Park, which is a massive coastal lagoon made up of small islands with calm waters.
Many visitors take a boat out to Deserta Island or Culatra to relax on quiet, sandy beaches away from the crowds.
Food is another reason Brits love Faro. Fresh seafood is served in local restaurants, with traditional dishes like cataplana (a rich stew often made with clams or prawns) proving especially popular.
The marina area is lined with bars and cafés where you can sit back and watch the boats.
Faro may be the capital of the Algarve, but it's often less busy than places like Albufeira or Lagos.
That makes it ideal for families or couples looking for a more relaxed break.
It's estimated that more than 300,000 British tourists visit the Algarve each year, with many flying into Faro Airport.
The city has become a firm favourite thanks to its warm weather, gorgeous sea and interesting culture, and most importantly, all without the high price tag this August.
