Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim tore into his players following their shocking Carabao Cup exit at the hands of League Two side Grimsby Town. The Red Devils were embarrassingly dumped out of the competition after a dismal 2-2 draw, losing in the penalty shootout.
Amorim didn't hold back in his post-match interview with Sky Sports, expressing his disappointment and frustration at his team's lacklustre performance. He said: "In the end it doesnt matter if we recover or not. I know the best team won, the only team that was on the pitch. The best players lose because any players can win against any group of players."
He then cryptically added: "I think the players spoke really loud today. The best team won. I think it's really clear what they spoke. Let's move on from this day. I think it was really clear what happened today."
When asked about what went wrong for his side, he responded: "I don't know. Not just the space but the way we start the game without any intensity, any idea of pressure. We were completely lost. They spoke really loud.
"I think that [the same issues] is a problem. When you lose and see something new, it is different. We have to say sorry to the fans. The support that they gave us with all of the defeats, I just have to say I'm really sorry.
"I think they [the players] gave the response on the pitch today so I don't have to talk about that. We have a game at the weekend and then we have two weeks and we will sort things out."
Andre Onana had a night to forget in Grimsby, but Amorim has declined to point the finger solely at the Cameroonian. As he responded to the question, Amorim's frustration grew and he added: "When you play, with respect, a fourth division team, it's everything. Not just the goalkeeper. It's every detail. My players spoke for me really loud."
The Red Devils will be hoping to clinch their first victory of the season this weekend as they host newly-promoted Burnley at Old Trafford.
In other news, Grimsby have been rewarded with a draw against Championship side Sheffield Wednesday after managing to get past the Red Devils.
