Too much cholesterol can block your blood vessels and and increase the risk of serious heart problems and stroke. People with high cholesterol often have no symptoms and go undiagnosed until they have a blood test. Eating too much fatty food, not exercising enough, being overweight, smoking and drinking alcohol can all increase risk.
A doctor has revealed that one often overlooked food can help to lower cholesterol and boost gut health - and costs as little as 79p. Professor Franklin Joseph, of Dr Frank's weight loss clinic, said the humble red cabbage is packed with antioxidants.
He explained: "Red cabbage is one of the most underrated superfoods in the supermarket. It's rich in fibre, low in calories and packed with compounds that support gut health, reduce LDL cholesterol and promote a healthy immune system. It's an incredible food - especially when you consider the price."
Although often overlooked by shoppers who favour trendier greens, Prof Joseph said red cabbages are a "nutritional powerhouse".
They contain five, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds and have been linked with improved digestion, reduced cholesterol and even lower blood pressure.
Prof Joseph said the prebiotic fibre in the vegetable feeds good bacteria in the gut, helping to create a balanced microbiome.
He added: "Gut health plays a huge role in everything from immunity to mood regulation. Adding a few spoonfuls of raw or lightly cooked red cabbage to your meals is a simple way to support that."
As well as feeding the gut, red cabbage contains sulforaphane-like compounds similar to those found in broccoli, which are believed to play a role in reducing the risk of certain cancers, Prof Joseph said.
He added: "It's not just about fibre or digestion. Red cabbage supports detox pathways in the liver, helps lower inflammation, and has even been linked to improved heart health thanks to its antioxidant profile.
"In a time when many people feel priced out of healthy eating, red cabbage proves that you don't need to spend a fortune to eat for longevity."
A whole red cabbage costs just 79p at Sainsbury's, Aldi or Tesco.
