Former Manchester United and Tottenham star Christian Eriksen could given the opportunity to return to football, with Bayer Leverkusen appointing ex-Denmark boss Kasper Hjulmand as their new manager. Eriksen has been clubless since his departure from United at the end of his contract last summer.
As a free agent, he is eligible to sign for a new club despite the closure of the summer transfer window. The Danish ace has been linked with a host of clubs in recent months.
He was reportedly in discussions with Championship outfit Wrexham, but it seems he declined the chance to join the Welsh side. In order to keep up his fitness levels, Eriksen has been training with Swedish team Malmo.
His lack of club affiliation resulted in him being omitted from Denmark's latest squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Scotland and Greece during the current international break. The 33-year-old will be keeping an eye out for the right opportunity, and a managerial shake-up at German side Bayer Leverkusen might just provide that chance.
Leverkusen recently announced the appointment of Hjulmand as their new manager, following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag earlier this month. The 53-year-old is best known for guiding Denmark to the semi-finals of the European Championship in 2021, where they were defeated by England.

Eriksen was a key player in that Denmark squad, but his participation in the tournament was cut short after he suffered a cardiac arrest during the opening match against Finland. After making a full recovery, he returned to action in 2022 and has remained a consistent figure for his country.
Given their previous working relationship on the international stage, Hjulmund might look to Eriksen as he seeks to make his mark on his new team. Leverkusen could also be scouting for additional attacking midfield talent following the £116million summer transfer of Florian Wirtz to Liverpool.
However, the club did secure the services of Ibrahim Maza and Malik Tillman - both of whom play in that position. Tillman made an immediate impact on his debut, netting a goal in the 3-3 draw with Werder Bremen.
With existing options in the attacking midfield role, should he move to Leverkusen, Eriksen might struggle to secure a regular starting spot. To ensure consistent playing time, the midfielder may need to consider a step down, a decision that ultimately rests with Eriksen himself.
