Bacon will be crispier and healthier if you follow one 10-minute method

Cooking bacon usually means oily splatters everywhere, including your clothes and cupboards. However, there is one method that not only avoids that altogether but also makes bacon crispier and healthier in much less time.

It's quick, easy, and doesn't need any added oil. There's no flipping, no greasy pans to wash, and no smoky kitchen to air out afterwards. Even better, the fat drains away during cooking, which means you're left with leaner, tastier strips of bacon. And instead of coming out chewy or rubbery, each slice is evenly cooked with golden edges and a crispy bite.

The best part is that it only takes about 10 minutes from start to finish.

This simple method uses an air fryer, which circulates hot air around the bacon while letting the fat drip away. It's cleaner, faster, and healthier than using the oven, hob or microwave.

Meat experts at Godshall's, who specialise in high-quality beef and turkey bacon, say air frying is one of the easiest ways to cook bacon at home.

They said: "The air fryer heats bacon evenly while draining excess fat for that great crispy texture. Plus, it requires no added fat."

They added that because the grease drips away into the bottom tray, the bacon doesn't shrink as much and ends up with more flavour and less mess.

For regular slices of bacon, experts at Godshall's recommend cooking at 180C for seven to 10 minutes. Thicker cuts may need a little longer, around 20 minutes at 150C.

They also advise against using foil or parchment paper, as this can block airflow and stop the fat from draining.

Instead, place the slices directly in the basket in a single layer, without overlapping.

To reduce smoking, you can add a tablespoon or two of water under the basket. This doesn't affect the taste or texture but helps keep the air fryer clean.

For the best results, cook just a few strips at a time and check them halfway through to make sure they're not overdone.

Ingredients:

  • 6-8 slices of bacon (pork, turkey or beef)
  • 1-2 tablespoons water (optional, for reducing smoke)

Method:

  • Preheat the air fryer to 180C (or 150C for thick-cut bacon).
  • Place the bacon in a single layer in the basket, without overlapping.
  • Add a bit of water under the basket if needed to reduce smoking.
  • Cook for 7-10 minutes, or longer for thick slices, until crispy and golden.
  • Remove and place on kitchen paper to absorb extra grease.
  • Serve hot with eggs, in a sandwich, or however you like your bacon.
