Saubhagya Sundari Vrat: Sacred Story and Rituals to Strengthen Marital Bond

Saubhagya Sundari Vrat is observed annually on the third day of Krishna Paksha in the Margashirsha month. It is believed to bless married couples with unbroken good fortune, marital harmony, prosperity, and children, while also helping unmarried girls overcome marriage obstacles. The fast also provides relief from Manglik Dosha and bestows beauty and good luck.

According to legend, this vrat is connected to Goddess Parvati’s rigorous penance to marry Lord Shiva. It stems from the story of Goddess Sati, who immolated herself after dishonor by her father and vowed to become Shiva’s wife in every lifetime, later reborn as Parvati whose devotion earned Shiva’s hand.

The ritual puja starts by awakening early, bathing, and wearing fresh clothes. Devotees first worship Lord Ganesha, then the nine planets, followed by Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati together. Offerings include sixteen items such as makeup, roli, kumkum, rice, and betel nut to Parvati, and datura, belpatra, and bhang to Shiva. The mantra "Om Umaye Namah" is chanted during prayer.

A strict Nirjala (no water) or fruit diet fast is observed throughout the day, with food only after evening puja. Reciting the vrat katha is essential to reap full benefits of the vrata and enhance love and goodwill between husband and wife.
