A mother will serve less than a decade in prison for killing her young daughter because the hungry toddler cried for food.
Suad Ali, who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in April, has now sentenced to just over 12 years for deliberately suffocating the three-year-old. She has been told she will spent two thirds of her sentence behind bars, with the remainder served under supervised release.
Ali pleaded guilty to killing her daughter on July 10 2023, and admitted getting angry when the child was crying for food. Police documents at the time said an officer arrived at her home in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, to find the girl - who has not been named - lying on the living room floor unresponsive.

Officer state Ali was sitting on the sofa as a family member, Ibrahim Ali, was found kneeling over the youngster shouting. A report stated Ali had placed her hand over her tot's mouth and suffocated her. The girl was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
According to Valley News Live, Ali allegedly smiled as medics who were performed CPR on child. They also claimed Ali also told officers that she repeatedly punched her daughter in the throat, and laid on top of her in an attempt to prevent her from crying.
Reports suggest that during her interview at the Otter Tail County detention facility, the mother said the child's father had abandoned them and that the girl was being raised by Ali and her mother. She her daughter's grandmother "usually fed her but she was not there at the time".
Ali also reportedly told police she attempted to stab the child with a knife earlier in that evening night, according to People. The girl was rushed by first responders to Essentia St. Mary’s hospital, Detroit Lakes, where she died.
The case was delayed after it was announced last year that the 27-year-old mother had been deemed 'unfit' to stand trial. Otter Tail County Human Services conducted a screening and provided a recommendation regarding whether Ali should be civilly committed or not.
She was eventually put on trial earlier this month. Ali was sentenced to 150 months and court documents confirmed 70 per cent of the sentence will be carried out in prison, with the remaining part served under supervised release. She had previously pleaded guilty to second degree murder.
