At least 15 people lost their lives in the last 24 hours across Bundelkhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh as heavy rainfall and lightning strikes battered the region, triggering house collapses, flash floods, and widespread devastation. The victims include farmers, labourers, and schoolchildren caught unaware during a sudden spell of intense weather activity.

The worst-hit areas were Chitrakoot, Banda, Hamirpur, Kanpur Dehat, Unnao, Bhadohi, Jaunpur, Chandauli, and Azamgarh, where monsoon fury upended normal life. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that this rain spell is likely to continue for the next seven days, with moderate to heavy rainfall expected in several parts of the state.

According to Regional Meteorological Centre scientist Mohammad Danish, Chitrakoot recorded the highest rainfall at 216 mm, followed by Kanpur (126 mm) and Banda (115 mm). The relentless downpour brought temperatures down by 1–2°C but caused severe damage on the ground.

In Chitrakoot, three people died, including two in separate incidents involving collapsing mud structures and one farmer who was swept away in a swollen stream. In Banda, a lightning strike in Kallu Purwa village under Badauasa police station led to the collapse of a mud house, burying a mother and her two sons. One of the children died, while the others are under treatment. In another incident in Dadaun village, a farmer was killed and two others were injured by lightning. Banda saw 46 mm of rain in 24 hours.

Mahoba district was inundated after overnight rains that continued into Sunday morning. Nalas, canals, and river crossings overflowed, cutting off road access to 20 villages, forcing people to take detours of up to 30 km. Rainwater entered schools and homes, causing disruption to classes and forcing evacuations. Mahoba recorded 110 mm of rain by evening.

In Hamirpur, five farm labourers planting paddy in Shivni village were struck by lightning. One of them died on the spot while four were critically injured. Nearby rivers and streams overflowed, isolating entire villages. The district recorded 68 mm of rainfall.

In Unnao’s Bangarmau tehsil, a young farmer planting paddy was struck and killed by lightning in Alolapur village.

Six more deaths occurred in Bhadohi, Jaunpur, Chandauli, and Azamgarh due to lightning. In Bhadohi’s Samdha Deeh, four people—including three women and a teenager—were injured by lightning while planting paddy. Sughra Devi (45) died during treatment. Two schoolgirls were injured in Dheria, with Sonam, a Class 8 student, declared dead.

In Jaunpur, Dharmendra Yadav (28) died in Jamalpur village after a direct lightning strike.

In Chandauli’s Ghoswa village, three women were injured by lightning. One of them, Nirasha (40), died during treatment.

In Azamgarh, Kailashi Devi (42) died after being struck by lightning while working in her field in Badgahan village. One person died due to lightening in Lucknow.

Officials have urged people to stay indoors during thunderstorms and avoid working in open fields. With more rain forecast for the coming week, the administration has been put on alert across the vulnerable districts. Relief efforts are underway, and damage assessment teams have been deployed.

While the rainfall has brought temporary relief from heat, its destructive intensity has left a trail of grief, broken homes, and flooded farmlands across large parts of Uttar Pradesh.
